Dee Marshall
Dee Marshall, a proud and resilient Romany woman, comes from a lineage rich in tradition and history. She is the great-granddaughter of the renowned William "Billy" Marshall, famously known as the King of the Gypsies. Her life has been a tapestry woven from the experiences of her ancestors, infused with a deep sense of pride in her Romany heritage.
My Story
Born into a traditional Romany family, Dee’s childhood was spent moving between England, Scotland, and even as far as Australia, living in caravans (trailers) with her family. These travels shaped her understanding of life, where the values of family, culture, and resilience were at the heart of her upbringing. Australia, especially in the 1980s, felt quiet and isolated for Romany people, far from the vibrant communities of Europe. Yet, Dee treasures the time spent learning Romany traditions from her family. Her father, in particular, was dedicated to preserving their heritage, teaching Dee the art of basket weaving from tree leaves and the skills needed to craft traditional Romany items.
"My father and my grandad always used to say, ‘Never give up, you're a Marshall. Always remember what I went through and never forget where I came from.’” These words became the foundation of Dee’s strength. Her education was deeply rooted in her culture, learning the customs, stories, and values passed down through generations of Romany people. Raised by her parents, grandparents, aunt, uncle, and cousins, Dee developed a strong connection to her heritage, learning not only survival skills but the importance of family and community in Romany life.
Even now, Dee is inspired by her grandfather’s voice in her heart. "I can hear my grandad in my head saying, ‘You're a Marshall, Dee Dee. Don’t give up.’” These words continue to guide her, determined to honor her roots.
Today, Dee is a strong, successful mother of six, deeply committed to raising her children with the same values that shaped her life. Her journey has come full circle as she takes on the role of trustee for Pride of Romany, an organization dedicated to ensuring that the Romany people are accurately represented and understood. Dee’s mission is to shed light on the distinct identity of Romany people, often misrepresented or confused with other nomadic communities. She is determined to preserve and promote the Romany culture, ensuring that future generations remain proud of their roots, just as she is of hers.
In her role, Dee is passionate about raising awareness of her people’s heritage and fostering a deeper understanding of their unique history and contributions. She envisions a future where Romany people are recognized, not for their stereotypes, but for their strength, resilience, and rich cultural legacy. Through her work, Dee hopes to inspire others within the Romany community to embrace their heritage and carry forward the traditions that have been passed down through generations.
Dee Marshall’s story is one of unwavering pride, deep cultural roots, and a desire to build a brighter, more inclusive future for the Romany people—guided always by the voices of her ancestors reminding her, "You're a Marshall, never give up."

I hold my head high knowing where I come from, knowing the sacrifices my family made, and the strength they’ve passed down. The memories of my childhood, of my grandparents William and Dina, and their resilience, are woven into the very fabric of who I am. And though the world may change, the power of family, of tradition, and of our Romany roots will never fade.
I am proud to carry their name. I am proud to carry their legacy.
