As a Romany Gypsy woman, I can’t describe how proud I am of everything we achieved with the gala.
Not only did we celebrate our ancestors, have Romanichals from other parts of the world attend, and show recognition for the non-Gypsy people who have significantly helped and supported Pride of Romany, but we also had one hell of a party, showcasing the talented Manolitos Schwartz's voice (fellow rumney).
The outstanding Crewe Hall, where the event was held, felt like being in a movie set and was the perfect venue for the Peaky Blinders theme.
So, what am I hoping we achieve from these kinds of events? … Attention! Our people’s attention (Romanichals) to get them talking and to be more intrigued about Pride of Romany and our heritage. We want them to take pride in who they are and, most importantly, to know who and what they are.
We’ve already seen a number of people asking, “What was this about? What was the event for? Tell us more about what Pride of Romany is!” So for me, the evening was a success, as it has done exactly what we set out to do, and we now have people determined to come to the next event.
For the future, I would love to see more cultural events and for our young generation to be celebrated, supported, and recognised for going above and beyond, whether it’s for their talent or for raising awareness about our people and who we are.
I think it’s crucial to support our young generation, as they are the future.
The aim is to open people’s minds and show them that we are not the stereotype you see on silly TV programs. We want to educate others about who we really are, so hopefully, there will be more acceptance for our people in the future without trying to mould us into what society wants us to be.
